The elephant is the largest
of all the land animals. It has a big body with two small eyes. It has four legs that are like pillars and two ears
that are like two winnowing (ft) fans. It has a long trunk. It gathers his food with it and breathes
through it. The Elephant lives on grass, plants and fruits. He is very fond of
plantain trees and sugarcane. Elephants are found
in Bangladesh, India, Burma, Sumatra, Thailand, Sri-Lanka and Africa. It is the
strongest of all land animals. It is very
intelligent too. When trained, they come to the service of man. In olden times
the rich people used them for going from one place to another. Today they are mostly used for carrying
heavy loads of stone and timber in the hill
area. The elephant comes to the use of man even after its death. Its bones and
tusks are used for making valuable articles. He is obedient to his
driver who is called `Mahut.'
