I made an enjoyable journey by train last week. I like to tell something about it. My elder sister lives in Dhaka with her husband. My parents told me to pay a visit to her residence. So. I accompanied by two of my friends took a journey by train from Jamalpur to Dhaka. We bought our tickets and got into the train at 5 a.m. It was an inter-city train. It stopped only at Mymensingh and then reached Dhaka, We had an exciting experience of the journey. The train was not very crowded. We enjoyed the mild jerking of the train and the rhythmic sounds of the wheels. We also enjoyed various scenes on the both sides of the railway line. They seemed to be running in the opposite direction. Houses, trees, bridges and stations came and vanished in the twinkling of an eye. All these were worth seeing and enjoying. We enjoyed them very much. The memory of the journey will remain ever fresh in my mind.

A Paragraph on A Journey by Air

A journey by air is thrilling and at the same time enjoyable. A few days ago, I made such a journey from Dhaka to Chittagong, It was December 23, 2002. I arrived at the Zia International Airport, Dhaka, about an hour before the flight. An airport officer checked my ticket and did all other formalities for the flight. At about 8:30 a.m. I boarded the plane with other fellow passengers. When all the passengers were in, the plane took off. Soon the plane started flying high above the land at full speed towards the destination. Looking through the window I saw patches of clouds floating around the plane. The houses and trees below were looking like tiny toys. Rivers flowing below appeared to be thin lines drawn on a sheet of paper. I was beside myself in joy in such a amazing situation. It was a short journey. In less than an hour the plane reached Chittagong Airport, It gradually came down and landed smoothly. Thus my first but happy and enjoyable journey came to an end. Although I felt a little nervous at the beginning, I got it over after a short while. I really enjoyed the journey.

A village fair is a large gathering of men, women and children on a particular occasion. People of all ages specially the children eagerly wait for this happy occasion. A village fair is usually held once a year either on the first or on the last day of the Bengali year. It is generally held on the bank of a river or a canal, in front of a Temple or a Darghah or under the shade of a big spreading banyan tree. A village fair is an exhibition of the village products. People of different professions such as potters, carpenters, blacksmiths, weavers and others bring their own hand-made products in the fair for display and sale. Various fancy goods such as toys, whistles, combs, hairpins, cosmetics, looking glasses, earthen wares, balloons, etc. are also brought for sale in the fair. In addition to these, different kinds of sweets and seasonal fruits are sold in the fair. Some special and attractive arrangements are also made in the fair to attract and amuse the people. These are magic shows, circus, puppet shows, mock fights, jatra, jarigan etc. A village fair really appears before the villagers with all opportunities for joy and merriment. It gives them much relief amidst their toilsome life.

A Baishakhi mela which is a regular gathering of people is held every year in the month of Baishakh. The mela holds the image of rural Bangladesh. It is one of the chief attractions of village life. Stalls of various things and articles of daily use are set up in a mela. Traditional handicrafts, bamboo flutes, potteries, wooden things are available in these stalls, funny goods, sweetmeats, dolls, toys etc. are also sold in the mela. Men, women and children come to the mela in large numbers to enjoy themselves. Women and children are found busy in buying things after their choice. Grown up people buy things of household needs and stationery goods. Cultural functions of the traditional Bangla folk-song, jaree, bhawaia, etc. are often held there. Sometimes, circus parties and magic shows become the special attractions of the mela. The mela lasts for throughout the month of Baishakh. Now the Baishakhi mela is also held in towns and cities which establishes a relationship between a village life and a city life. The mela is regarded as a great source of joy and happiness to the people.

A teacher who absolutely devotes himself to the task of teaching his students is called an ideal teacher. An ideal teacher is a very renowned person in the society. He dispels the darkness of ignorance from the minds of his students and enkindles the light of education in them. He helps his students in learning their lessons. Through his teachings he makes them clever and brings about a desirable change in their behaviour. He teaches them to follow the path of truth and avoid the path of vice. He applies all his technique and methods to build up the character of his students. He is in fact, a friend, philosopher and guide to the students. Moreover, he is thoroughly a sincere and an honest man. This is why he is considered as one of the most important persons in the society. He is regarded as a guardian of civilization.

There are many students studying in different institutions in our country. But only a few of them may be called as ideal ones. An ideal student should have such good qualities as would attract other students to follow him. He should be punctual and well disciplined. He does not waste his time and energy in anything other than his studies. He learns his lessons well, goes to school regularly and does his works properly. Besides these, an ideal student is polite and well behaved with all both inside and outside of his institution. His polite and gentle behaviour along with academic excellence makes him dear to teachers and students. Moreover, an ideal student is co-operative and helpful to his friends as well as to the members of his family. He respects his teachers, parents and superiors. An ideal student refrains himself from all sorts of evil deeds. So, it should be the endeavour of all students to be ideal ones.

Air is one of the most important elements in our environment. No creature can live without air. It is called the life-giving force. But this air sometimes gets polluted and becomes a threat to our life. Air is polluted in various ways. The most common agent that pollutes air is smoke. Smoke of all kinds pollutes air. Man makes fire for cooking food, burning refuse, melting pitch etc. Thus they create smoke which mixes with air and pollutes it. Railway engines, mills and factories, buses, cars, trucks, steamers, launches and automobiles use coal, petrol and diesel to make energy. When these are burnt they create smoke and air gets polluted. The most serious air pollution occurs in big industrial areas where there are many big mills and factories. Again air pollution happens in big cities where many buses, trucks and cars ply along the streets every day. With a view to ensuring a healthier and happier life for all, we must keep air free from pollution. By abstaining from making smoke or at least minimizing its creation we can control air pollution to some extent. Above all, it is our strong civic sense that can act as the vanguard against air pollution.

Water is an important element in our environment. No creature can live without it. It isessential for life. But polluted water is harmful to it. Water is polluted in many ways. Our farmers use chemical fertilizers in their fields to grow get better crops. They use insecticides to kill the harmful insects that damage their crops. These are sometimes washed away into the rivers, canals and ponds and get mixed with water and pollute it. Sometimes, mills and factories throw their waste products containing poisonous chemicals into rivers and canals and pollute water. Again, launches and steamers and even sailboats pollute water by throwing burnt oil, food waste and human waste into the rivers. Often human waste and filth from the insanitary latrines and kutchha drains run into the rivers and canals and ponds and thus pollute water. Polluted water causes various kinds of diseases and sometimes causes death. So, we must prevent the pollution of water in order to live a healthier and happier life.

A day-labourer is a very common person in our society. Generally he has no land and property of his own. He exchanges his manual labour on the basis of daily payment. He works in different fields according to his strength and ability. He rises early in the morning and goes out in search of work. He works hard from dawn to dusk for his employer and gets his wages at the end of the day. He is absolutely dependent on his daily work. "No work, no wages"— such is the fate of a day-labourer. If he gets more work, he earns more. When he earns more, he and his children can eat to their hearts' content. When he doesn't get any work, he and his family have to go without food. Really the life of a day-labourer is a painful one in our country. He works hard all day long but he can hardly make his both ends meet. Sorrows and sufferings are his constant companions. He can hardly enjoy peace and happiness. His misery knows no bounds when he gets ill. It is true that the rich and privileged class of the society do not evaluate his services properly. It is our duty to recognize his services and do something for him so that he may live a decent life with dignity.

A railway station is an important place in the system of railway communication. It is a place where trains stop to take in and to drop down passengers and goods. It remains busy almost all the time of the day and night. Every station has one or more than one platform so that the passengers can easily get in or get down from the trains. In every station there is at least a long building, which is called station house. The building has several rooms which are used as a hooking office, ticket counters, waiting rooms for passengers. Besides, there are rooms for stationmaster, guards and other officials and so on. The stationmaster is all in all in a station. He is assisted by a number of staffs, railway police and guards. The passengers collect their tickets from the ticket counter before the arrival of the train. When a train arrives, the whole station area turns into a noisy place. Some passengers hurry to get down from the train, at the same time passengers waiting for the trains want to get on it. At this time coolies are also found busy carrying luggage of the passengers. As soon as the train leaves, the station sinks into silence and turns into a deserted place.

A bus stand is a very busy place. Buses stop here for a few minutes so that passengers can get in and get down from the buses. There are some bus-stands in a city or a town. Passengers are always found waiting at these stands. When a bus comes and stops at such a stand, there is an unusual bustle and hurry among the passengers. Some passengers hurry to get down from the bus, while the others want to get into it. As a result, there is a great collision among the passengers. In such a situation the old and the weak find it difficult to get into or get down. The situation often goes so far that it seems passengers are fighting with one another to get in or, to get down first. Taking advantages of this, pickpockets sometimes pick the pockets of the passengers. Moreover, shouts of coolies, conductors, bus helpers make the place more noisy These are the usual sights of a bus stand during the busy hours of the day. Besides these, hawkers are often found busy selling their goods like cigarettes, betel-leaves, newspapers, fruits etc.

It sleeps by day and goes out a hunting an hour or two before dusk. The tiger is really a dangerous animal. It kills a man when he happens to come on his way. That is why, the tiger hunters are very careful and alert when they go out on hunting in the forest.

Rice

Rice is the staple food in Bangladesh. Almost two-third people of the whole world live on rice. We get rice from paddy. Rice grows well in host and moist climate. It is grown mainly in Bangladesh, India, China, Pakistan, Burma, Indonesia, Japan, Canada, the USA. Vietnam, Thailand and Malaysia. There are mainly four kinds of rice. They are Aus, Aman, Boro and Irri. Aus is sown in Baishakh and harvested in Sravan. Aman is sown in Asar ans Sravan and reaped in Agrahayan and Pous. Boro is sown in pous and harvested in Chaittra. Irri is grown through the year. We can prepare different types of food from rice. We eat boiled rice, which is called Bhat. Chira, muri, khai, hotchpotch, polau, biriani etc are made from rice. Different types of Pitha or cakes are also made from the powdered rice. Straw is used for making the roof. It is also used as fodder and fuel in rural areas.
